In EarthComm, students learn about the interactions among the various parts of the Earth systems by reflecting on the ways in which matter and energy flow through the Earth system, and the different ways in which Earth’s process occur over time and space.  The rocks and minerals pictured above is a larger than average set which we have have specially manufactured to ensure the investigations are more clear and concise.

Where are the most active places of the Earth’s crust formation and destruction? In this investigation your students will model plate direction and rates of movement using our specially designed Plates Motion Model. They will also study the structure of Earth’s crust and the underlying mantle. Principles covered include types of crust and techniques for monitoring plate movement.

Fault Block Model

Have you ever experienced an earthquake before? In this investigate your students will use our IAT Fault Block Model to experience what happens to energy from an earthquake. The students are asked to describe the causes of earthquakes, how they transmit energy, and how different types of seismic waves move. Principles covered include earthquakes and types of seismic waves.

Rock Sets

In what kinds of environments do Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary rocks form? Using our specially manufactured IAT Rock Sets your students will observe characteristics of all types of rocks. They will then model how rocks are formed change their shape and are deformed. Principles covered include the study of the characteristics of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, classification of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks and rock forming environments for igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.

Coal Set

How does coal form? Using the specially manufactured IAT Coal Observation set your students will investigate the coal’s physical properties of different types of coal. They then will look at a map that shows the distribution of coal resources in the United States. Using data on trends in coal production and consumption in the United States they will extrapolate into the future. Possible methods to conserve coal resources are also investigated. Principles covered include physical properties and formation of coal, distribution of coal deposits, fossil fuels, trends in coal production and consumption, coal exploration, mining and conservation.

Fossil Set

What evidence would the geologist find to know that life had existed in your community? In this investigate your students will use our specially designed fossil to model fossilization using plaster and a shell. Students then examine the different levels of the ecosystem and identify which organisms are more or less likely to be preserved in the fossil record. Principles covered include food chains and food webs, fossils and the geologic time scale.
